The Gulag.cz research team travelled to Uzbekistan, specifically to the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan in the western part of the country, which is also home to the shrinking Aral Sea. In the Karakalpak capital of Nukus and the nearby town of Takhiatash, expedition members investigated the physical remains of an early-1950s Gulag construction project known as the Main Turkmen Canal, as well as the remains of former prisoners’ barracks.
